CLOVE OIL AS AN ANAESTHETIC AGENT IN NILE TILAPIA (Oreochromis niloticus) AND COMMON CARP (Cyprinus carpio)

A study was conducted to determine the safe and effective concentration of clove oil to achieve a state of sedation and anaesthesia in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis Niloticus) and common carp (Cyprinus carpio) with short exposure (<30 min) and also to ascertain the most suitable concentration to maintain desirable level of anaesthesia for a period of 12 hours.

Average time taken for the onset of ananesthesia in 30 µl/l and 90 µl/l clove oil concentration for tilapia were 14 ± 2.1, 4.5 ± 1.1, 2.2 ± 0.9, 0.7 ± 0.1 and 0.5 ± 0.2 minutes respectively while it was 13 ± 2, 3± 0.9, 2 ± 0.4, 0.9 ± 0.1 and 0.5 ± 0.2 minutes respectively for common carp.  With olive oil concentration of 15 µl/l all the fish were found either in the stage of deep or mild sedation.  Both species recovered within 90 seconds irrespective of the clove oil concentration to which they were exposed.  Clove oil concentration of 45 µl/l, 60 µl/l and 75 µl/l could be used to achieve anaesthesia within five minutes with 100% survival in both species.  Clove oil concentration of 10 µl/l and 12 µl/l could be safely and effectively used to sedate tilapia and common carp for a period of 12 hr.

II. FEEDING PRACTICES

Majority of the swine farms (59%) in the Western Province were engaged in fattening and breeding. Twenty six percent of the farms were involved in fattening while 14% of the farms were for breeding only.  Sixty five percent of breeding and 82% of fattening farmers were small holders in the province.  The mean age of starting concentrate feed to pig lings was 5 weeks.  Ninety percent of farmers used concentrate feed but only in 17% of the farms, concentrate was used as the sole feed in the provinces.  Swill feeding was practiced in 81% of the farms in the province and the use of swill in Kalutara district was higher than the other districts.  Seventy percent of farmers in the province used include garment factories, army camps and higher education institutes.  Twenty four percent of farmers used poultry offal as substitute for swill in the province and there was no significant correlation between broiler farming and feeding of poultry offal.
